Partnership to give students with disabilities workforce experience

Wright State University and Procter & Gamble Co. are forming a new partnership to offer internships to students with disabilities, which the university hopes will give students the experience they need to secure a job after graduation.

More people with disabilities are going to college — the United States saw a 20 percent increase from 2003 to 2009 — but many are still not getting jobs and when they do, they often earn half what others make, according to the Center for an Accessible Society.

The overall unemployment rate for people with disabilities was 15 percent in 2011, while the rate for people with no disability fell slightly to 8.7 percent, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

“Not many students with disabilities get that workforce experience,” said TyKiah Wright, a Wright State alumnus who helped establish the new partnership with P&G; through her nonprofit WrightChoices Inc., which places students with disabilities in internships.

“Many college students arrive on campus having never had a job, so their confidence level in being able to do it is at rock bottom,” said Jeffrey Vernooy, director of Wright State’s Office of Disability Services.
